Connecticut native Reggie Ruggiero was a dominant driver on the Northeast NASCAR and open-competition asphalt Modified circuit from the 1960s through the 2000s.
Ruggiero raced on the NASCAR Modified Tour from 1985 until 2009; in 419 Tour races with 44 wins. Although not becoming a Tour champion, he finished as runner-up in Tour points seven times.
First competing at CT’s Plainville Stadium in the 1970s, he won over 200 features. That included 93 wins at Riverside Park (Mass.); 25 at CT’s Stafford Speedway, including major victories there in the Spring Sizzler (1987 and 1993), Fall Final (1984, 1987 and 1989), the Winston 100 (1983 and 1987) and the Connecticut Classic 150 (1992 and 1993); six on the New Hampshire Mile, and the 1988 Race of Champions at Pocono.
He drove Modifieds fielded by Mario Fiore, Ed Cloce, Mike Greci/Bill Pelley, Tony Moffo and Dick Barney. Well-known for his car-building expertise with Ed Flemke Jr., at CT’s Race Works, most-recently Ruggiero has been working with Stewart-Haas Racing in their chassis shop. |
